Each of my works originate from a desire to create spaces of contemplation that bring people into closer contact with the environment. In a series of recent paintings I began layering color on top of an existing work to juxtapose a realist background with a surface that is about color and form, suggesting there is a disruption taking place in the contemporary moment between the two.

As an extension of this work, I am exploring how urban materials used in building and construction can be exploded to create a fluid labyrinth that embodies some of these paradoxes between solid forms in the city and the realities and transparencies of climate change, which often feel intangible. These themes converge as a conversation between architecture and the way we inhabit space, our emotive experiences and how this phenomena manifests in environments as a reflection of cultural forces at work in a place. I am interested in how these cultural forces are transient and shift dynamically much like a rainstorm. The video piece draws on these themes, amplifying tension between phenomenal forces and the corner of a room. 

Lesia Mokrycke is an interdisciplinary sculptor, environmental artist and landscape designer who works intuitively with visual, sound and model-making processes to create works that visualize phenomena, raising awareness about the constructed nature of the built environment in relation to the atmosphere, and plants. In studying natural systems, Lesia’s work explores how we experience and relate to the environment, creating immersive installations that reimagine relationships between the body, earth, and movement to choreograph physical spaces. Her large-scale design works draw on history, memory and time to logistically organize geographic landscapes, while focusing on issues of cultural identity in contemporary culture.
